Book Group Services

Bloomfield Public Library offers book discussion programming throughout the year at both library locations, as well as support to independent book groups.

Book Discussions

Prosser Library and McMahon Wintonbury Library both have regularly scheduled book discussions. When possible, the titles selected for discussion are available in regular, large print, and audio formats to participants. New participants are always welcome at the library sponsored book groups.

  • The Prosser Library book discussion group meets on the third Wednesday of each month from 7:00 – 8:00 P.M. in the Community Room. Discussions are facilitated by librarian Sara Ray.
  • The McMahon Wintonbury Library book discussion group meets on the second Thursday, September through June, from 6:30 – 7:30 P.M. Discussions are facilitated by librarian Sheila McCallum.
  • Additionally, there are occasional mystery and literature book discussion series offered at Prosser Public Library, led by guest scholars.

Check out the library event calendar to see upcoming book discussions and titles.

Services to Independent Book Groups

As an added service to readers, Prosser Library is offering services to all Bloomfield residents who participate in independent book groups. Residents may register their book group at the Prosser Library or McMahon Wintonbury Library. Staff will help you select and obtain copies of books for your group. We can also provide your group with a web guide to resources for your group to research books, authors and find reviews, author biographies and interviews.

Selecting Books

Our staff is always happy to help you choose the perfect title for your book discussion. Call, email, or drop by the library to speak with a staff member about book suggestions.

Additionally, multiple copies of selected books in our collection are available to be borrowed as a group, or individually. The current list of titles includes about 50 books.

Getting Multiple Copies

Multiple copies of a book may be available through interlibrary loan. First, register your group at the adult reference desk at Prosser Library or McMahon Wintonbury Library. We will ask for the names, library card numbers, and email addresses of group members.

Book groups may submit a list of their chosen books to Sara Ray or Sheila McCallum, with the dates of planned discussions, and we will let you know if we are able to supply multiple copies for the group. Please allow a minimum of six weeks before the group’s scheduled meeting for us to obtain books from other libraries.

Once your group is registered and your list is checked, multiple copies of the selected title will be requested and readers will receive notification when copies are available for pick-up. One book will be checked out to each member of the group. The books must be returned to Prosser Library within two days after the group’s scheduled book discussion date. Each group member is responsible for the book checked out to him/her.
