Global Read-Aloud story share: THE DAY YOU BEGIN (YouTube, starting Oct. 2)

The Global Read Aloud project was created in 2010 with a simple goal in mind; one book to connect the world. From its humble beginnings, the GRA has grown to make a truly global connection with millions of children having participated. The focus of the 2023 GRA are the books of Jacqueline Woodson. TWEEN Dungeons & Dragons (Oct. 5 @ 6:00 PM) (330 Park, Rm. 131)

By popular demand, we are expanding our Dungeons & Dragons groups to offer this group specifically for TWEENS! This will be a 6-week series for kids who are new to D&D, or who just want to connect with a new group of players. Tabletop Gaming Center staff will act as “Dungeon Master” and will lead the group to help kids learn how to develop characters and play the game. This group will meet every Thursday from October 5-November 9 (6-7:30 PM). The program will take place in our Bloomfield Human Services Building (330 Park Ave, Rm. 131). Snacks will be provided! Space is limited (only 6 members can participate in the campaign!), so sign up early if you’re interested! Read more >

Planetarium Show #1 (Oct. 7 @ 1:00 PM) (330 Park, Gym)

Bloomfield Public Library is partnering with The Children’s Museum in West Hartford to bring kids and families a traveling planetarium show! Enter Starlab, a portable planetarium with an astronomer from The Children’s Museum to take a deeper look into our Earth’s sidekick, the Moon. Learn about moon phases, eclipses, moons of other planets in the solar system, and even some of the constellations you might be able to see in the night sky. There will be two show times (1PM and 2PM). Michele Urban presents “Spaceship Harmony” (Oct. 11 @ 10:30 AM) (Bloomfield Town Hall, Council Chambers)

Spaceship Harmony…A Musical Journey Through the Universe, will take families on a musical adventure with stellar songs, galactically cool games, and rhythm instruments. Blast off in a stretchy rope rocket ship, walk on a parachute moon, shake your moon rocks and defy gravity, dancing with colorful scarves. Children and adults will experience new and familiar music with a cosmic twist. Registration is appreciated, but not required. Best for ages 5 and under. Read more >

Pokémon Eclipse Party! (Oct. 14 @ 1:00 PM) (330 Park, Rm. 131)

Oct. 14, 2023 will be an annular eclipse. Even though we won’t see the full eclipse in CT, viewing an eclipse is an experience we don’t want to miss! So let’s have a Pokémon eclipse-viewing party! We’ll make our own eclipse viewers and then step outside to see the eclipse (which peaks at 1:23pm). As always, we’ll still have some time for swapping Pokémon cards, eating some goodies, and watching a Pokémon episode or two. Registration is appreciated to make sure we have enough materials to make the eclipse viewers.

International Observe the Moon Night (Oct. 21 @ 7:00 PM) (Bloomfield Town Green)

International Observe the Moon Night (IOMN) is a time to come together with fellow Moon enthusiasts and curious people worldwide. This NASA-sponsored event occurs annually in September or October, when the Moon is around first quarter ― a great phase for evening observing. Join staff from BPL and members of the Astrological Society of Greater Hartford (ASGH) as we celebrate IOMN and look at the moon in the night sky. We’ll have telescopes and binoculars on hand for a closer look. Snacks and some other fun items will be on hand to add to our fun. For all Ages – no registration required. Our moon viewing will take place on the Bloomfield Town Green. PLEASE NOTE: THIS EVENT WILL BE CANCELLED FOR RAIN OR CLOUDY SKIES (RAIN DATE IS 10/28). Tween Book Club: THE CHALICE OF THE GODS (Oct. 23 @ 5:00 PM) (Zoom)

In October, we have a special Rick Riordan book club event! Percy Jackson’s story continues in the new installment to the series: THE CHALICE OF THE GODS! And best of all, I can actually give out copies of the book to keep for anyone interested in joining the discussion! Just visit our new BPL location at The Atrium (1300 Hall Blvd) to pick up your personal copy of the book! You must be registered for the program to claim a copy of the book. There are a limited number of copies, so free books are only available while supplies last. BPL Storytime: Meet a Dental Hygienist! (Oct. 25 @ 10:30 AM) (Bloomfield Town Hall, Council Chambers)

Our BPL storytime will have special guest Yolanda Baes, a regional dental hygienist with Children and Family Dentistry of Hartford! This storytime will take place at the Bloomfield Town Hall Council Chambers (800 Bloomfield Ave., Bloomfield, CT 06002). We’ll share stories, songs, rhymes and more! No registration is necessary. Best for ages 5 and under.
